breathing el agua. sound. 5 min 49 sec. field recordings. appropriated audio. 2025

Recorded and composed in Oaxaca, Mexico, breathing el agua is an audio work that propositions the body, land, and psychogeography as a container for paradox, tenderness, heartbreak, transience, and memory.

Borrowing associations from water, the natural environment, and breath that symbolize concepts such as rebirth, purity, passageways, release, and fluidity, the artist’s own strained breath during a mountain hike towards water is positioned with an appropriated booming echo, as a key element of the work drawing upon her own complex states of embodiment and ancestral inheritance — wanted and unwanted, known and unknown, physical and spiritual.
